Physical medicine and rehabilitaions

The use of electrical energy for treatment purposes is called electrotherapy. There are different types of electrotherapy which are prescribed by a doctor, specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, according to different symptoms and diagnoses. In Katlanovo’s Bath the following are practiced: - Interferential Currents – Diadynamic currents – TENS – Galvanic simulation

The use of ultrasound therapy has several effects on the human organism. It acts to increase the local circulation, to reduce the swelling in tissues and to achieve an increased extensibility in the collagen fibers. It acts in an analgesic manner and accelerates the regeneration of tissues.

The use of a magnetic field in medicine is called magnet therapy. It has several therapeutic effects on the human body: it improves the flow of arterial and venous blood, simulates the osteoblasts, chondroblasts and fibroblasts, improves oxygenation and tissue metabolism, acts in an analgesic manner, simulates endocrine functions, strengthens the immunity of the organism and simulates the creation of callus.

Paraffin treatment is a kind of a physical thermotherapy procedure. Purified medical paraffin is used for therapeutic purposes, in which paraffin oil can be added during melting at a ratio of 7:1 in order to improve its elasticity and homogeneity. It melts at a temperature of 45° to 52° C and is applied heated at a temperature of 52° to 60° C, depending on the region on which it is applied. In therapeutics it is applied in several cases: joint contracture, after contusions, distortions, dislocations, arthrosis, spondylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, periarteritis, myofibrositis, radiculopathies, neuropathies, scars caused by burns, keloids, etc.

Phototherapy represents treatment utilizing the effect of light energy on the human organism. Laser therapy – Application of the laser in medicine, i.e. its biological effect depends on the wavelength and the energy with which the laser is utilized. Laser beams have an effect on the accelerated regeneration of damaged and diseased tissues and simultaneously help reduce the pain and swelling while having an anti-inflammatory effect. While fulfilling their biostimulative effect they have minimal heat dissipation. Laser therapy finds application in the treatment of the following medical conditions: - Degenerative joint diseases – Traumatic lesions and occupational diseases of the locomotor apparatus. – Diseases of the nervous system, such as inflammation of the peripheral nerves, virus infections (herpes zoster) and conditions after traumatic nerve injuries – Application in skin diseases, such as open wounds, decubiti, herpes simplex

In addition to the sun, which is a natural source of infrared rays, the infrared lamp is used in physical therapy. Symptoms for its application are sinusitis, muscle pain, degenerative rheumatism and man others. The effect of this type of a therapy is an improved blood circulation and alleviation of chronic pain.

Manual massage is the use of specific hand motions by the therapist on the patient’s body. The manual massage can be a therapeutic-medical massage (lymphatic drainage and reflex massage), a sports massage and a relaxing massage.

Kinesio taping is a rehabilitation technique utilizing the application of special kinesiology tape covering the diseased region. It is a method created to support the natural healing process of the human body by providing support and stability to the muscles and joints, without limiting the range of their movement. *Harmless method for all ages, from pediatric to geriatric. *The tapes do not contain latex and can be worn for several days (after their removal, a pause of two days ought to be made, and then new tapes can be applied) *Kinesiotherapy successfully treats various conditions from the field of orthopedics, traumatology, neurological and other medical conditions. *By acting upon several receptors, kinesiotherapy alleviates pain and increases the lymphatic drainage by the microscopic raising of the skin in the region in which it is applied. *It can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to alleviate pain, swelling and inflammation, to prevent the occurrence of injuries to individuals doing sport-related activities, improves blood circulation and accelerates the healing process. *Kinesiotherapy can be used in combinations with other rehabilitation techniques such as hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, cryotherapy, acupuncture, manual therapy. *The removal of the tapes should be performed according to the instructions of the same certified medical practitioner who performed their application.

Cryotherapy is the use of a cold dipper zone (cold pads) for therapeutic purposes. It has an analgesic effect, reducing the irritability of nerve endings and lessening swelling. It is applied to muscle spasms after recent injuries, swelling due to injuries and inflammations.

Exercise therapy is the application of measured and controlled use of special procedures for the accelerated restoration of the functional and working ability of the injured limb. It is particularly important for establishing coordination and motor function in the hand, through the application of special repetitive exercises and movements.

The treatment of disease with mineral springs is called balneotherapy and is used in various groups of patients with diseases of the locomotor system: conditions following implanted endoprosthesis, post-traumatic conditions, arthrosis, spondylosis, degenerative disc disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, shoulder periarthritis, congenital hip dislocation, scoliosis and other spine deformities, contractures, flaky paresis and paralysis, spastic paresis and paralysis, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (without sphincteric difficulties), etc. The application of exercising in water is called hydro-kinesiotherapy. The effects of exercising in water considering all of its influences are the following: 1. Alleviated pain, alleviated muscle tension, relaxed contractions, improved muscle tropism. 2. Quick recovery of the ability to do joint movement in full extent. 3. The water resistance creates an environment for performing resistance exercises and thus improving the muscle strength. At the same time water circulation massages the tissues. 4. The hydrostatic pressure with its compressive effect on the peripheral blood vessels improves circulation and cardiac performance. 5. The chemical composition of water performs its effects on the organism. (analgesic, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, reparative, etc.) 6. Psychotherapeutic effect, optimism, an ever-increasing engagement and cooperation by patients.

Kinesiotherapy is a field of physical medicine concerned with the application of special motions, exercises for therapeutic purposes and its role is the improvement of the condition of the locomotor apparatus, the improvement of the range of movement of the affected limb, the prevention of joint contractions-numbness and increment of the muscular strength. The exercises in Katlanovo’s bath are performed by professional and trained physiotherapists. The exercises can be -individual, according to the diagnosis and condition of each patient separately -group exercises. Various types of exercises exist: active exercises, actively aided, passive exercises, weighted exercises, breathing exercises, balance and coordination exercises, walking exercises.
